Healing Birth Trauma
When I first started teaching mums and their birth partners I was very aware of the possibility I may be teaching someone who has suffered from birth trauma, whether I am aware of it or not. And so I closely follow a model of care established by the Make Birth Better organization ( aims to prevent birth trauma as well as managing existing trauma.
The essential nature of an antenatal hypnobirthing course is to inform, empower and support mums and their birthing partners which is the best way to prevent birth trauma and to a degree heal past experiences too. But I really wanted to be able to offer something that would maximize chances of a positive birth experience and so I trained in the Rewind Technique in 2019 and am now thrilled to be able to offer this incredible healing therapy.
What is Rewind Therapy?
A simple and short therapy technique that usually requires no more than two sessions to bring closure on a traumatic event and greatly reduce PTS and PTSD symptoms. The technique's main benefit is in stopping all involuntary recall of the trauma.
It is a non-disclosure therapy, so you don't need to talk about the traumatic event, unless you wish to.
What can you expect during a RT session?
I can come to you or you can come to me, whatever is easiest and most comfortable for you. It can also be done remotely (on the phone/facetime).
I will ask you to fill in a simple tick box style questionnaire to determine the level of your trauma. Again, I will not need any information about the trauma.
I will then explain to you how RT works in detail so you know exactly what to expect. Once you have a good understanding of the technique I will guide you through a calming relaxation so you're in a calm relaxed state, feeling safe and comfortable.
You will then use the RT by imagining yourself in your safe place and then watching a screen that is showing the traumatic event, rewinding it and coming back to your safe place.
Once the Rewind is done, I will talk you through some simple grounding and mindfulness techniques to support your healing.
The session will then end and I will invite you to attend a follow-up session 2 weeks after. Again, this can be done remotely.
Who is it for?
Birth trauma can affect anyone. You can be affected by birth trauma even if you haven't been through a traumatic birth but have maybe heard of a traumatic experience, witnessed one etc. A traumatic birth isn't defined by anything in particular, it's how you feel about the experience that matters.
If you think you are suffering from PTS or PTSD, you can see your GP for additional support.
It doesn't have to be birth trauma. If you think you could benefit from RT in preparation of your labour then please get in touch.
THIS IS A PAY WHAT YOU WISH SERVICE: a suggested amount of £25 per session to cover time and travel, but not a requirement.
